This miniaturized chest-on-frame would have added a note of whimsy to its sensibility - most probably used to store silver, jewelry, delicate garments or sewing materials. The Eldred Wheeler version has a scalloped skirt that was characteristic of those made in Connecticut and Massachusetts in the mid -18th century.
In Eldred Wheeler's early days, customer feedback often drove design changes or the creation of new forms. Modeled after an antique miniature chest, but with the added height of a frame, the Mini Queen Anne Chest On Frame was one such piece.
Eldred Wheeler customers routinely inquired about small chests to hold jewelry, scarves, or other small items, but the prototype of this piece was developed upon request by a customer who wanted a piece of furniture to store his prized collection of rare antique pistols. While the customer provided the dimensions of the interiors of the drawers to suit his needs, the scalloped skirt was patterned after several pieces made around the Preston, Connecticut, area in the mid-to-late 18th century.
Though the Mini Queen Anne Chest on Frame is not an exact copy of a specific antique, it is a "believable form" that could easily have been built by a colonial craftsman using the same materials and processes more than 200 years ago. Like the best early examples, the top drawer is carved with a fan and is simulated to look like three drawers.
There's a good chance that a real antique version of any plausible new 18th century style creation will turn up at some point. In fact, that actually happens over and over again with Eldred Wheeler reproductions.
